THE LIGHTBULB MOMENT

After some miserable years in the corporate world, I finally asked myself a simple question: what is the point of all this? I couldn’t come up with a good enough answer and so the next day I quit office life for good. I had no plan, just fear and hope as my driving forces. It was a scary but necessary epiphany.

THE LEAP OF FAITH

I applied for a role in a secondary school supporting young people experiencing behavioural and emotional difficulties. At that time, I had no background in education and very little experience outside the corporate environment. Understandably I was initially rejected, but when the chosen candidate withdrew, I was offered the position.

My early days in school were tough, I felt like a fish out of water and wondered on that first morning if I had made the biggest mistake of my life. I realised I didn’t really know how to communicate with students, and I tried to imitate what I saw around me. It didn’t work, and it didn’t feel like me. The turning point came when I understood that what helped most was to stop, listen, and try to see the young person’s world through their eyes. That commitment to listening became the foundation of my approach and led me toward training as a counsellor.

THE CONTINUING PATH

A pivotal moment during my training was working at a men’s prison. It was there that I truly understood how early life experiences can shape a person’s journey. I also learnt how easily hope can fade when people feel that change isn’t possible.

It was moving to witness clients begin to realise that hope and the possibility of change exist within them (as it does within us all), regardless of their journey so far.

Today, I work in private practice providing counselling in Spalding for adults, and part time in a secondary school counselling students aged 11–18 years.

I am an Accredited Member of the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society and am fully insured.
